Once you get connected a bunch of stuff will scroll by on your screen.
After it stops type: /join #SLAA
[Make sure to type it *exactly* like that--using upper case letters.] That should pop you
in to the meeting. I may be running the meeting as "secret" which means that you
may not see us if you type the /list command. Just type /join #SLAA and you should
find us.
If you plan on participating in an IRC meeting please be on time! It makes it very
difficult to conduct a meeting when people keep showing up late and asking what the topic
is, etc. However, if the only way you can come is late, come anyhow.
You can just come and lurk. That is OK, but you will be asked if you are there for the
recovery meeting and a response will be required.
Once you have joined the IRC there are certain rules to follow. There will be a
chairperson in charge of conducting the meeting and there may be a topic for the night.
If you want to share you must type: !
The chairperson will recognize you when it is your turn to speak. No cross talk
(commenting on someone's share) is allowed! The SLAA tradition is that we can share
anything without of being given feedback. However, you will be free to chat informally
with others after the meeting is over.
Because what you want to say will probably go longer than one type written line
conclude each line with: ... to indicate that you are still speaking.
Keep your lines short always ending with that ... if you want to continue.
Keeping lines short helps to keep things moving more quickly.
When you are through sharing please signal this by ending with: done
You might want to send a private message to someone attending the meeting. To send a
private message to Joe type: /msg Joe blah, blah, blah. You can also open up a
private window by typing /query Joe blah, blah, blah. This helps in keeping the
general meeting on topic but gives attendees the flexibility they need.
To leave the irc type: /quit
Again, anyone who is recovering or *wants* to recover is welcome. These meetings are
usually structured much like a 12 Step or AA meeting. |
